Program Areas
The Center for Technology, Security, and Policy is the university hub for research, teaching, and outreach security affairs. The Center pursues its mission by concentrating on several complementary research program areas:
The Complex Threat Environment
The program on the Complex Threat Environment explores the historic, economic, social, and religious factors that affect the behavior of political actors and the use of violence to achieve political objectives. It promotes study and learning of the theory, strategy, doctrine, operations, and tactics of threat organizations. It aims to inform policymakers, scholars, and students about the factors that create and drive organizations that use violence to produce political change.
Technology in Support of Public Policy Decision Making
The program on Technology in Support of Public Policy Making seeks to support policymakers with science and technology that will enable them to better understand the complex network of interactions among individuals, technologies, human institutions, and environmental systems that spawn interdependent problems of governance and policy. Its goal is to develop reliable, useful scientific methods and technology that support knowledgeable security decision making related to large, complex human systems.
Security in Complex Environments
The program on Security in Complex Environments studies problems where technology, security and public policy intersect. The program pursues research projects that will enable scholars and students to learn and to improve their understanding of the political, economic, military, information, and social factors that impact security decision-making in complex social systems. The program's goal is to develop and promote public policies that enhance security while promoting freedom and individual liberty.
Strategy, Planning and Leadership
The program on Strategy, Planning and Leadership enables practitioners, scholars, and students to better understand and to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Its focus is on research that contributes to the knowledge and understanding of organizational effectiveness and leadership in security related operations. Its goal is to promote responsible, innovative security strategies and plans and to create unique opportunities for individuals to develop as effective leaders in security affairs in government and in the private sector.
